Advanced Counselling

This course is designed to include a balance of skills and theory intended for people who wish to become competent in the use of counselling skills and people who want to work towards a qualification for professional counselling practice.

Entry requirements

You must hold a WJEC/AQA Intermediate Certificate in Counselling Skills or equivalent and demonstrate a good level of ability in oral and written communication. An interview is necessary, possibly to include a test of written communication skills.

What will I study?

Year 1 ? (Unit 1) The developing practitioner, Humanistic/Existential theory, Key concepts of psychodynamic theory, key concepts of cognitive behavioural therapy. (Unit 2) Humanistic school of thought, Gestalt therapy, psycho synthesis, Existential therapy, Theories of loss & grief, Bowlby and attachment, Kubler-Ross, stroebe and schut etc. Year 2 ? Therapeutic practice,; Identify & evaluate the key concepts of the person centred approach (the core model); development of self awareness in relation to the core model; Working with the process and practice of counselling; Engage in critical thoughts about personnel assumptions, beliefs and value system; Supervised practice within a recognised organisation.

How will I be assessed?

Year 1- Weekly journals (300 words), 3 Essays of 2500 words, Practical assessment and Externally set examination. Year 2 ? 1 Essay 2500 words, weekly journals (800 words), assessed practical and external assessed case study.

Career Opportunities & Progression

After successful completion of this course you could seek employment as a counsellor under the umbrella of an organisation, you could also progress to a Level 4/5 Diploma in Counselling.
