NVQ Level 1 Electronics with Computer Repair & Level 2 Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Pre-Apprenticeship) & Welsh Baccalaureate

This 1 or 2-year course provides a mixture of nationally recognised training, with the emphasis being placed on ?learning by doing?, whereby academic work is reinforced through practical activities. You will study a number of NVQ units, alongside approximately six hours per week of studying the City & Guilds 6958 Electronic Servicing (Part 1) course. Alongside this course you will also study the Welsh Baccalaureate.

Entry requirements

There are a variety of acceptable entry requirements for this course, but each student?s qualification profile and previous learning experience will be reviewed at interview. However, in terms of acceptable GCSEs, a points system linked to your GCSE grades can be used and the following table can be applied. You would need a total of 12 GCSE Points for this particular course. When calculating your points you should include English/Welsh, Mathematics and a Science subject in the points calculation. Points Calculation GCSE Grade = Points Score A* = 8, A = 7, B = 6, C = 5, D = 4, E = 3, F = 2, G = 1.

What will I study?

Year 1 You will study a number of NVQ units, alongside approximately six hours per week of studying the City & Guilds 6958 Electronic Servicing course that leads to a ?Technical Certificate?. NVQ units you may study include Electronic Assembly & Wiring, which specifies the competencies required to work from circuit & wiring diagrams and layout drawings, Electronic Systems, which involves servicing and fault-finding on circuits and systems. You will also study relevant computer software packages and applications along with computer repair skills. In course assessment of practical assignments will be carried out. For the Welsh Baccalaureate you will explore a wide range of areas including how Wales 'fits in' with Europe and the rest of the world, the health of the nation and how to be enterprising. Year 2 You will study a number of NVQ units, alongside approximately six hours per week of studying the City & Guilds 6958 Electronic Servicing course (Technical Certificate) which includes Commercial or Control Engineering. NVQ units you study at Level2 may include Electrical Wiring, Wiring Enclosures, Electronic Assembly and Electrical CAD. In course assessment of practical assignments will be carried out. For the Welsh Baccalaureate you will explore a wide range of areas including how Wales 'fits in' with Europe and the rest of the world, the health of the nation and how to be enterprising.

How will I be assessed?

This programme of study is by continuous assessment of practical competencies. After one year, you will be given the opportunity to sit a multiple-choice examination, which leads to a City & Guilds 6958 Electronic Servicing (Level2) qualification.

Career Opportunities & Progression

Having developed fundamental practical skills and a basic understanding of electrical and electronic concepts, employment opportunities exist in the field of Instrumentation and Electronic Control, such as petro chemical, gas and water distribution along with Electronic Assembly and Automation. After successfully obtaining both NVQ and City & Guilds certificates, you will be encouraged to seek apprenticeships within the relevant industry. You may also be able to progress to City & Guilds 6958 (Level3) Advanced Technical Certificate.
