Foundation Degree in Sustainable Construction and Surveying
Course Outline
The construction industry offers a wide range of career opportunities including jobs as Site Managers, Safety Advisers and Project Planners. This course equips students with the specialist knowledge and skills needed to support development and management of the built environment. It includes a 15-week period of employment-based learning enabling academic knowledge to be applied to the workplace.
This 2-year Foundation Degree is awarded by the University of Glamorgan. It has support from Asset Skills, the Sector Skills Council for facilities management, housing, property, planning, cleaning and parking, and from Construction Skills, the Sector Skills Council for every part of the construction industry, from architects to bricklayers. *This course is offered by Universities Heads of the Valleys Institute (UHOVI), a strategic partnership between the University of Glamorgan and University of Wales, Newport. It is supported by the European Social Fund and is subject to validation.
Entry requirements
Normally 1 A-level and 5 GCSEs at grade C or above; or a BTEC National Certificate/Diploma/Advanced GNVQ/AVCE in Building Studies (or similar). Mature students may be accepted without qualifications, subject to interview.
What will I study?
In year 1 you will study core modules, plus modules from a range of options. In Year 2, you will study taught modules plus a module in employment-based learning.
Year 1: Construction Technology 1; Built Environment Law; Materials & Science; Project Practice; Surveying & Measuring Buildings; Personal Development Planning; NEBOSH Health and Safety National General Certificate.
Year 2: Construction Technology 2; Professional Practice 2; Independent Study; Project & Development Appraisal; Tendering and Estimating; Employment-based Learning.
How will I be assessed?
You will be taught through lectures, seminars and tutorials and will have to spend extra time working on presentations, assignments and problem-solving exercises. Most modules are assessed through a mixture of examinations and coursework.
Career Opportunities & Progression
Graduates could progress to middle management roles in the construction industry, including site management, higher technician, project management and control, and other related functions in this growing industry. Students who successfully complete this course may progress to an Honours Degree.
