Gateway to Computing & Welsh Baccalaureate

This 1-year course offers you the opportunity to study a foundation computing course from both theoretical and practical applications. You will gain the knowledge and experience required to enable you to use Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Databases and PowerPoint packages and investigate simple computer set-up and maintenance procedures. Opportunities exist to use the Internet & become familiar with digital peripheral devices such as printers, scanners & the digital camera. Alongside this course you will also study the Welsh Baccalaureate, which is equivalent to 1 GCSE. Due to the structure of this course, on successful completion you will achieve 2 qualifications, enhancing your future opportunities.

Entry requirements

You will require GCSEs at grade G or above or qualifications in appropriate subjects at entry level. In addition all students will be invited to attend an interview and undergo a Basic Skills Assessment.

What will I study?

You may study a range of units mostly at Level I, which provide a broad background & introduction into the world of computing. You will be familiarised with popular Microsoft packages such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint & and Access, as well as being trained to set-up computers and their peripheral devices. You will also study the Welsh Baccalaureate where you will explore a wide range of areas including Wales, Europe and the World; Work-related Education and Personal and Social Education. As part of the Welsh Baccalaureate you will develop your Essential Skills at an appropriate level in Communication, Application of Number, ICT, Working with Others, Problem Solving and Improving Own Learning. Basic Skills Support in literacy & numeracy is available where a need is identified.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed in all units by completing set assignments, short reports and project work. You will also be expected to maintain your course files and all portfolios to the required standards.

Career Opportunities & Progression

After successful completion of this course you have the opportunity to progress onto a level 2 computing programme such as the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in IT.
