BTEC National Award (Pre-Apprenticeship) in Engineering & Welsh Baccalaureate

This 1-year BTEC Subsidiary Diploma is a practical, work related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. It is equivalent to one A Level, which means you can use it to gain employment ? or increase your prospects if you are already employed. The qualification could be used alongside other qualifications for progression into Higher Education. Alongside this course you will also study the Welsh Baccalaureate.

Entry requirements

You will require one of the following: 4 GCSEs at grade C or above which must include Maths, English/Welsh & Science or equivalent qualifications, a BTEC First Certificate or Diploma, an Intermediate GNVQ (both in a related subject); at least four GCSEs at grades A* - C or appropriate work experience. In addition you will be invited to attend an interview.

What will I study?

The course is made up of two core units and seven specialist units. The specialist units enable you to study particular areas in more depth, ensuring progression to aerospace, automobile, computer aided, electrical/electronic, mechanical/manufacturing and operations & maintenance engineering - at National Certificate or National Diploma level. The two core units are: *Communications for Technicians and Science for Technicians. The seven specialist units are: Mathematics for Technicians; Electrical & Electronic Principles; Electronics; Electro, Pneumatic & Hydraulic Systems; Engineering Drawing; Computer Aided Design and Health, Safety & Welfare. You will also study some practical Performing Engineering Operations and NVQ units, to further supplement your theoretical studies. * This unit contributes towards the externally assessed Integrated Vocational Assignment (IVA). For the Welsh Baccalaureate you will explore a wide range of areas including how Wales ?fits in? with Europe and the rest of the world, the health of the nation and how to be enterprising.

How will I be assessed?

All units are internally assessed and graded with an overall grade for the qualification awarded. The externally assessed unit is graded through the IVA.

BTEC National Awards are valued by employers and Higher Education institutions (universities and colleges). Successful completion of this course would provide an ideal route into a Modern Apprenticeship programme, in many different engineering areas; or to continue with your studies.
