BTEC Level 2 Diploma in IT & Welsh Baccalaureate

This 1-year full-time course offers you the opportunity to study computing from both theoretical and practical applications. You will gain the knowledge and experience required, enabling you to support and maintain computer systems. Alongside this course you will also study the Welsh Baccalaureate, C&G Certificate in IT Systems Support PC Maintenance (Level 1) and BTEC Award in Workskills. Due to the structure of this course, on successful completion you will achieve 4 qualifications equivalent to 5 GCSEs grade C and above, greatly enhancing your future opportunities.

Entry requirements

You will require 4 GCSEs at grades E or above or a City & Guilds Level 1 in IT or Computing. You should also have a reasonable standard of English & Maths. Mature learners may present a more varied profile of achievement that is likely to include experience of paid and/or unpaid employment. In addition, all students will be invited to attend an interview and undergo a Basic Skills Assessment.

What will I study?

You will study 7 BTEC units/modules, these may include: Communicating in the IT Industry; Working in the IT industry; Computer Systems; Project Planning with IT; Setting up an IT Network; IT Technical Support; Website Development. You will also study the Welsh Baccalaureate where you will explore a wide range of areas including Wales, Europe and the World; Work-related Education and Personal and Social Education. As part of the Welsh Baccalaureate you will develop your Essential Skills. Basic Skills Support in literacy & numeracy is available where a need is identified.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed in all units by completing set assignments, short reports, presentations and a range of practical tasks. You will also be expected to maintain your course files and your Key Skills portfolios to the required standards.

Career Opportunities & Progression

After successful completion of this course you have the opportunity to seek employment as a Junior Helpdesk, Network or Systems Technician. Alternatively you can build on this qualification and progress onto a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in IT course, which will further your future opportunities of employment.
