First Diploma in Art & Design & Welsh Baccalaureate

Course Outline

This 1-year course is the equivalent of four GCSEs grades A*- C. It is a practical course supported by a study of historical & contemporary art and design. You learn by completing projects and assignments that encourage you to experiment and explore different techniques and processes. It provides a good basis to progress to more advanced work-related qualifications. The course provides a broad based approach to the art & design sector, giving you the opportunity to acquire and develop visual communication skills.

Entry requirements

You will require GCSE Art or a related subject at A* - C, plus 3 GCSEs at grades D or above; or relevant work experience or other related level 1 or 2 qualifications. You will be invited to attend an interview with your artwork.

What will I study?

The course introduces drawing & painting skills and working in an experimental way with a range of media and techniques in both 2 & 3 dimensions. You will gain an excellent grounding in traditional techniques as well as computer technology. You will be encouraged to explore and develop art and design ideas and produce effective outcomes.

How will I be assessed?

All units are internally assessed and externally moderated, and on successful completion of the qualification an overall grade of pass, merit, or distinction is awarded.

Career Opportunities & Progression

On successful completion of the course you are able to apply for National Diploma courses in relevant areas.
