Students and their families gathered in the auditorium at the Rhondda Campus on Tuesday evening for the Annual Prize Evening. The college’s Hospitality and Catering students greeted the guests serving light refreshments.

Awards were presented to learners of all ages to celebrate their outstanding achievement; all the students invited to the evening had worked hard to achieve fantastic results in their studies, some overcoming adverse circumstances to do so.  The overall award of the evening went to Michele Burton, with Justin Thomas and Ross Greenwood receiving recognition for their achievements.

The evening commenced with a welcome from the Principal/Chief Executive Mrs Judith Evans, Congratulating the students she said “ I hope your awards this evening will be the start of a successful career, the staff at the college are proud of your achievements and wish you well in your chosen career. I hope that this recognition will encourage you to continue in your lifelong learning”.

The evenings programme was compered by Samantha Tuck, Performing Arts student, she introduced fellow music student, Sion Carver who entertained the audience with an arrangement on the piano which he had composed himself.

Peter James, Chair of the Corporation echoed the words of the Principal and stated “These awards recognise outstanding achievement by learners who have completed college courses this year. All have their own story to tell and many have overcome great personal difficulties in order to complete their studies.”

Mr Jeff Gunningham, Chief Executive/Principal of Swansea College addressed the guests sharing some inspirational goals in his own life.  

Thirty awards were presented by Sara Edwards, BBC presenter who spoke of her academic studies and career path, she urged the students to ‘follow their dream’.

During the ceremony three memorial awards were presented to students, remembering staff members Wendy McGrath, Peter Owtrim and Bernard Owen.

The Performing Arts students concluded the evenings programme with an excellent performance of song and dance.
